By 'under appreciated' I take it you mean 'lack of commercial success' because I imagine that no one who had ever touched an electric guitar would dispute Jeff Beck's right to his place at the very top of the tree. You've almost certainly watched this clip before but it's worth watching again, not only for the stunning degree of control over the guitar shown by Beck, but also for the very obvious delight he takes in the performance of the 20 year old Tal Wilkenfeld. (Imagine. 20 and playing with Jeff Beck. At Ronnie Scott's no less... Wow.)

I'm a big Jeff Beck fan. Always the big hitter out of the three Yardbirds guitarists, as far as I am concerned.
The man is just sheer class.

I had the good luck to see him live November last year during his UK tour. Alas no Tal Wilkenfeld on bass though (she's also played with Chick Corea).

This is a lovely segue which includes Goodbye Pork Pie Hat:

Don't know about big hitter out of the Yardbirds - he's a big hitter out of any other guitarists you might care to mention. The more I listen the more I'm convinced that Jeff Beck's mastery of the electric guitar is unparalleled. His mature stylings are astonishing - from the delicate control of the tremolo arm and tone and volume controls, to the use of harmonics and the sudden squalls of energy - it's just riveting.

I have to admit, that is one fine tune! Have always had a great deal of respect for Beck, and consider him one of the top, all time for sure, but just haven't been exposed enough over the decades to various lineups so that I came away with "THIS is his best work". I think that of all the greats, he is one of the few that has maintained a high level of quality material throughout his ~ 50 yrs of playing. For some reason, though--and I am sure this is my lack of trying--I don't have a sense of this or that lineup was his best, by far, the way I do with EC, Jimi, Page and a few others.

A change of subject only for your eyes, here's the latest response to our recent rains...all important scale? I'd put it at: one fruit = your nail on your pinky finger. Named, appropriately enough for the time of yr fruits are present, the Christmas Cactus. The overall plant is about the size of a small park bench.

That is one truly funky cactus! I'll have to see what I can capture on my phone when I'm in the woods tomorrow for a little trans-oceanic cross-cultural reciprocation - though I doubt very much that we have anything so colourful this time of year.

As to Beck's best period - I really do think it's now. There aren't many who grow and mature across their career in the way that he has. Just what my ears are telling me any way.

"By 'under appreciated' I take it you mean 'lack of commercial success"

exactly. he has the most unique style out of all the top mentioned guitar gods(hendrix, clapton, page, srv, etc.) as a result, he doesn't appeal to the masses like hendrix, clapton, or page do for the most part, which equates to less commercial success and a general under appreciation. of course anybody who knows anything about guitar, knows that his talent is on par with any other guitarist. but because his style is more obscure, i feel he often doesn't get the credit he deserves when the discussion of all-time greats comes up.

i love that clip. btw, ever notice beck's resemblance to ron wood?
